Last snorkel in Antarctica - Curtis Bay 28 December
We're very excited to find out in the morning that we'll be having 1 last snorkel in Antarctica. We're doing a landing first to look at a gentoo penguin colony and admire some weddell seals which, as with all other landings, is a magical experience.
After the landing we push off out into a little bay adjacent to the main landing site, and hop in the water. Its quite different from last night's snorkel - a much larger area and shallower, between about 1ft and 5m. There's a lot more to look at as a result, including regular calls of 'penguin' from the Zodiac or other snorkellers. We have sightings of them getting in and out of the water, swimming past, and bobbing around on the surface. There are no words for the amount of happiness I'm feeling 🥰.
gentoo penguin swimming past - sorry it's not a great photo but I'm pretty chuffed I got it at all given their speed
The topography of the site is beautiful and there's scads of tiny krill and shrimp darting around, stunningly colourful kelp of different varieties, and some coral.
We're also treated to some whale bones and penguin egg shells.
it was a wonderful snorkel and we stayed in for about 45 minutes, with one snork having to almost be dragged out of the water at 50 minutes. A fabulous end to our Antarctic peninsula stay.
Amazing pics and love following your journey. Happy New Year 🥳 xx Michelle
